We pride ourselves on the quality of provision we are able to offer in relation to the area of health education. Amongst a range of areas, children learn about the effects of exercise, the importance of a balanced diet and how to prepare healthy meals, positive mental health and how to stay safe in a range of situations. Children are actively involved in supporting each other, and contributing towards the healthy atmosphere within the academy.
Children will experience a broad range of activities in their PE lessons. This will include dance and gymnastic activities, athletics, swimming and team games. Children have opportunities to improve upon their individual performances, and to compete in teams and as individuals. They are encouraged to overcome challenges and to participate in competitive physical activities. The academy aims to promote the enjoyment of PE for all children whatever their level of ability, and makes use of sports specialists to provide coaching for pupils.
At Manor Farm Academy, we believe that the teaching of Physical Education (PE) is a valuable part of the curriculum and drives pupils’ success across both their academic and personal lives. Our engaging PE curriculum promotes healthy, active living, providing pupils with the opportunity to develop a wide range of physical, social and mental skills.
Alongside this, pupils will engage in sport specific skills, allowing them to communicate, collaborate and compete with each other. We strive to ensure pupils are given the freedom to express themselves, be creative and develop teamwork skills, which they can carry on in later life. PE will be used to stimulate interest, enjoyment and confidence in physical activity.
Finally, the teaching of PE sets a strong foundation for children to lead healthy, balanced lives, both physically and mentally, prolonging their activity levels.
PE is taught through a structured sequence of learning, which builds upon previously taught skills required to succeed in that particular sporting area. Pupils are given opportunities make links to other sporting activities in which the newly learned skills can be used in. Appropriate scaffolding to support learning is provided to all pupils, through the differentiation of equipment, space, activity or outcome. Pupils are challenged to deepen their understanding and allow them to continue excelling in a given skill.
All PE lessons will start by reviewing skills learnt in their previous lesson to aid skill retention, followed by the development of a newly acquired skill. Pupils will practise this skill in isolation and develop it further through patterns and sequences. Finally, pupils will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and learning through modified competitive scenarios appropriate to their age and stage.
The teaching of PE is paramount to a child’s physical, mental and social development.
PE promotes regular physical activity, which helps children develop strong bones, muscles, and cardiovascular health. By learning about health and fitness, children become more aware of their bodies and are likely to adopt healthier lifestyles as they grow.
PE improves mental well-being, as active children experience less stress, improved sleep and improved self-esteem. PE also fosters resilience, self-discipline, and determination, as children learn to set goals, overcome challenges, and celebrate progress.
PE and physical activity is directly linked to improved concentration, memory and cognitive function, thus improving their overall academic performance. Exercise has been shown to increase energy levels and improve focus, helping children stay attentive and engaged in the classroom.
A range of social skills are learned through PE, such as teamwork, co-operation and conflict resolution. New friendships and hobbies can be made through physical activity.
Finally, PE is the foundation of lifelong physical activity and wellness. Pupils can discover what activities they enjoy and excel in, which encourages an established routine of physical activity from a young age. Children are then more likely to become active as adults, reducing long term health risks.
Pupils have the confidence to transfer their learned skills in PE into their day to day lives in school and beyond. Pupils will utilise a wide array or skills in various physical activities at play times, as well their improved social skills with pupils from other classes.
Sports leaders will work alongside their peers to facilitate sporting activities in a structured and enjoyable way during lunch times.
Our pupils will showcase a range of their learning through the variety of extra curricular opportunities available across the academy.
A range of after school clubs are on offer, including archery, yoga, health and fitness and tag rugby.
UKS2 pupils have the opportunity to represent the academy against other local schools in football and netball.
Pupils will have access to physical activity linked to dance across a wide range of cultures including Indian, African and South American.
Enrichment of the PE curriculum provides pupils opportunities to participate in activities they would not normally take part in, such as fencing, disability sports and scootering.
