At Manor Farm Academy, we are committed to providing the highest standards of achievement in mathematics.

All children are entitled to access all programmes of study in the National Curriculum. We implement a progressive structure regarding the learning of mathematics. Children are taught a range of strategies for calculating answers to problems mentally, as well as the more usual written methods. At Manor Farm Academy we use the White Rose Hub Scheme of Work.

Through the mathematics curriculum, we equip pupils with a set of tools to understand and access the world in which they live. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is a core subject which is vital in everyday life. It is essential in everything we construct, everything we calculate and many problems that we have to solve. We therefore endeavour to ensure that pupils develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them throughout their future.

Why do we teach Maths?

At Manor Farm Academy, we are dedicated to inspiring every child to reach their full academic potential. We set high expectations and create opportunities for success. Our goal is to develop confident and fluent mathematicians who can clearly articulate their understanding using precise mathematical vocabulary, and who can problem-solve and reason across various contexts.

To achieve this, we deliver high-quality, well-sequenced lessons that consistently revisit and build upon prior knowledge, effectively preparing children for the next stage of their education. We deliver a curriculum that promotes enthusiasm and enjoyment for learning through exciting and interactive teaching and learning opportunities.

At Manor Farm Academy our Maths learning equips children to solve problems by applying prior knowledge and develop their logical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through challenge, questioning, natural curiosity, and investigative approaches. Our Maths curriculum also develops confidence in our children, enabling them to articulate and communicate their understanding both in writing and verbally. We aim to provide a rich environment that promotes independence and encourages a range of strategies to solve problems. Additionally, our curriculum links mathematical skills to everyday life and maintains high expectations for all learners within mathematics.

How do we teach Maths?

The Maths curriculum at Manor Farm Academy follows the White Rose Maths programme of study, adopting a mastery approach. Maths lessons provide opportunities for children to explore concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches and will further develop children’s reasoning and problem solving skills.

Additionally, Maths learning supports children in developing rapid recall of timetables. Each unit of learning in Maths includes a pre-assessment to gauge the children’s understanding of the objectives to be taught in subsequent lessons. It features a cycle of lessons for each unit, carefully planned for progression and depth, tailored to the children’s needs based on the pre-assessment findings. There are daily opportunities to recap and revisit previously taught concepts, as well as chances to explore a variety of problem-solving, reasoning and mastery challenges.

The daily Maths lessons provide appropriate scaffolding to support learning and include challenges that deepen understanding. The Subject Leaders for Maths lead and monitor, evaluate, review and celebrate good practice.

The impact of teaching Maths

At Manor Farm Academy, our pupils understand the significance of Maths and its importance for their future. They know how to apply Maths to real-life contexts, enjoy the subject, and demonstrate inquisitiveness and curiosity through questioning and exploration. Our pupils feel both challenged and supported to reach their full potential.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through various methods, including NTS assessments and pre-assessments. We also utilise the Y4 MTC, marking and feedback in line with our Marking Policy, book looks, learning walks, pupil discussions, and pupil progress meetings.

Maths learning in action

At Manor Farm Academy, mathematical experiences are integrated into practical classroom lessons and extended through our wider curriculum and community. In addition to daily concrete, pictorial, and abstract experiences and fluency lessons, pupils engage in practical, real-world experiences during their mathematics topics.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1, students have access to a diverse array of resources. For instance, they utilise coins in their role play area and engage with pictorial representations in years 1 and 2 while ‘purchasing’ items. Additionally, they learn about shapes and incorporate them into construction activities. These experiences are integrated into our wider curriculum framework.

In Key Stage 2, Maths is integrated across various lessons within the curriculum. Students apply mathematical concepts to understand and organise events chronologically and apply this within their history learning, measure and compare capacity and mass and use this purposefully within their Food Technology and Design Technology lessons, and develop their data and graph reading skills within their Computing curriculum.

Additional Maths experiences

We acknowledge that maths plays a crucial role in everyday life, and we enrich our innovative curriculum by incorporating relevant real-world experiences. Our subject leader actively promotes learning beyond the classroom, facilitating opportunities for collaboration with the local community and beyond.

We engage in mathematics challenges with the wider Trust, encouraging broader involvement with the subject. Children have the opportunity to engage with the broader community during Lincolnshire Day, allowing them to demonstrate and apply their mathematical knowledge in practical, real-world situations.
